QUEENS, NY (November 25, 2004) - The St. John's University volleyball team will host its annual St. John's Classic this Friday and Saturday at the newly renamed Carnesecca Arena. The four team tournament will include #12 Florida, Towson, Wake Forest and host St. John's.
"We are very excited to host three of the best teams in the East Coast and in the country" said Head Coach Joanne Persico-Smith. "We are eager to get on the court again and compete against these great teams."
St. John's (15-14, 1-9 BIG EAST) finished its regular season as a Division I Regionally Ranked team for the second straight year, playing the toughest schedule in the program's 11 year history. Also, junior outside hitter Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, NY) notched her second career First Team BIG EAST honor. For the season, Ahlers set both the BIG EAST conference and St. John's record for kills in a single season with 616 total kills, a record she had originally broken in 2003. She is ranked 11th in the country and first in the BIG EAST with 5.45 kills per game, and ranks first in the conference in total points. During the season Ahlers was named to four different All-Tournament teams, including being named the Most Valuable Player at the IPFW Invitational and the Colgate Classic. For her efforts over the course of the season, Ahlers was named BIG EAST player of the week once.
The University of Florida (25-4), who currently ranks at #12 in the country, is coming off a tough 3-2 loss against Tennessee at the SEC Tournament Championship last weekend. The loss snapped a six-year streak of SEC Tournament titles for the Gators and ended their 20-match tournament winning streak. Jane Collymore (SEC Player of the Year) and senior Sherri Williams were both named to the SEC All-Tournament team.
Towson University (24-7) won their first Colonial Athletic Association volleyball championship with a three-game sweep of the University of Delaware last weekend. Winning its 10th straight match, Towson will advance to their first-ever NCAA Tournament. The 2004 CAA Player of the Year, Most Outstanding Performer and a three-time All-CAA first team selection, middle hitter Liz Goubeaux registered 21 kills with 10 blocks in the two matches during the tournament.
Wake Forest University (12-16) is coming off a first round ACC Tournament loss to Maryland, 3-1, a team who they had beat previously during the regular season. Setter Erin Borhart earned her seventh triple double of the season with 12 kills, 47 assists and 13 digs.
