Sherlock Named Co-BIG EAST Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's University softball sophomore Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) was honored as Co-BIG EAST Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. Sherlock shares the conference's first weekly award with Virginia Tech's sophomore outfielder Kelly Brown, as this past week marked the opening of the 2004 softball season.
Sherlock had a career week, earning 2004 Seahawk Classic All-Tournament team honors, while leading St. John's to the tournament championship game and a 4-1 record. She led the Red Storm in almost every major statistical category over the weekend, batting .632 (12-for-19) with 13 runs scored and 13 RBI. In addition, she hit five doubles and one home run, while adding two stolen bases.
Over the five games, Sherlock posted multiple hits in every game, while posting at least one run and one RBI in each contest. She set career-highs in Saturday's game vs. Coppin State, as she went 4-for-4 with five RBI, three runs scored and two doubles.
Last season, Sherlock earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors and was a unanimous selection to the conference's All-Rookie team, as she paced the Red Storm offense. She led St. John's with a .320 batting average, as she hit seven home runs, drove in 27 runs and scored 26 times.
The Red Storm went 4-1 over this past weekend, losing in the Seahawk Classic championship game to UNC Greensboro, 4-3. St. John's showed off their offensive ability in the first two days, exploding for 52 runs in the four games. On Friday, the Red Storm opened up their 2004 season with an 11-0 five-inning shutout of Vermont and followed with an 11-2 win over Liberty in six innings. St. John's came back on Saturday to post another five-inning shutout as they downed Coppin State 13-0 and continued their strong play with a 17-2 win over Hampton. As a team, the Red Storm posted impressive statistical numbers, as they hit .416 (57-for-137) with a .487 on-base percentage and a .613 slugging percentage.
