DELAND, FLA. - The St. John's University softball team fell to Stetson University, 8-5 this afternoon at the Stetson Softball Field. The Red Storm drop to 4-2 on the season, while the Hatters improve to 8-1.
Stetson scored first, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hatters scored their first run on an one-out single up the middle by pitcher Blake Hoorelbeke with the bases loaded. Two more runs plated when Jessica King stepped up with the bases still loaded and hit a weak grounder to first. The throw home got by catcher Carrie Kester (Farmington, N.M.) allowing the two Stetson runners to score. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) escaped further trouble, in her first start of the season, by stranding runners on second and third with one out.
Stetson added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Sherilynn Wilder, making the score 4-0. Wilder scored Brittani Houghton, who stole both second and third after getting on with a bunt single with one out.
St. John's posted three runs in the top of the fifth to shorten the Hatters lead to 4-3. Kester and sophomore Blair Belloni (Newport, Ore.) led off the inning with singles and advanced a base on a Stetson passed ball. With one out, sophomore Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) hit a ground ball to second, that was booted by Angie Eguilor, allowing Oliver to reach first and Kester to score. Belloni would score on a wild pitch in the next at bat, with Oliver advancing all the way to third on the play. Sophomore Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) would drive in the Red Storm's last run of the inning with a double off the right centerfield fence that plated Oliver.
Stetson would open the lead back up in the bottom of the fifth, as they scored four runs to push their lead to 8-3, on back-to-back home runs by Jessica King and Lacey Prince. King hit a three-run shot over the left centerfield fence, with Prince following with one a few feet over. The Hatters would put runners on second and third with two outs, but a diving catch by Sherlock in right centerfield would end the inning.
The Red Storm would battle back again in top of the sixth, scoring two runs to close the deficit to 8-5. With one out, freshman Loren Anguiano (Mesa, Ariz.) would knock a single through the middle and be followed by a Kester walk. A pass ball would advance them each a base with one out. Belloni would hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Anguiano and advancing Kester to third. Pinch hitter Christina Tucker (San Diego, Calif.) would drive a single passed the second baseman to score Kester and cut the Hatters' lead to three.
St. John's failed to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, falling to Stetson, 8-5.
The Red Storm will return to Deland tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Hatters. First pitch of the opening game is set for 1 p.m.
