PITTSBURGH, PA. - The St. John's University softball team was swept at Pittsburgh this afternoon in a BIG EAST doubleheader. The Panthers took game one 2-1 on a bases loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and followed up with a walk-off single in the eighth inning of game two, to take the game, 4-3. The Red Storm fall to 18-18 overall and 4-4 in the conference, while the Panthers improve to 18-26 overall and 3-7 in the league.
The Red Storm jumped out to the early lead in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, sophomore Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) kept the inning going with a single up the middle. Junior Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a RBI double over the left fielder head to score Sherlock from first.
Pittsburgh evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Francesca DiMaria. The Panthers placed runners on first and third on two walks with two outs and DiMaria followed with a single into right field, the first hit of the game off senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.).
The Panthers took the game 2-1, with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. After two singles by Pittsburgh, Fitzgerald intentionally walked DiMaria to load the bases with one out. She got Beth Gill to pop out to second base for the second out, but walked Christa Hunter on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Pittsburgh struck first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead in game two. Beth Gill beat out an infield single with one out and quickly stole second. During the same at bat, she stole third and the throw down went down the left field line, allowing her to score.
The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, Sheena Hellon lined the ball off pitcher Brittany Crouch (Irvine, Calif.). The ball got away allowing the run to score.
Pittsburgh scored for the third straight inning, taking a 3-0 lead after three innings. Lisa McGregor lined a two-out RBI double to left field to account for the inning's run.
The Red Storm had runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the fifth, but failed to get a run across, as they left runners at second and third for the third time this game. St. John's took advantage of two Panther errors to move the runner to second and third, but Meghan Bostick battled back to retire the next three in order, highlighted by a diving catch in center to end the inning.
St. John's finally got on the board in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by freshman Christina Tucker (San Diego, Calif.) to shorten the deficit to 3-1. Tucker led off the inning with a shot over the right centerfield wall for her eighth home run of the season.
The Red Storm wouldn't quit as they scored two runs on a home run by Saniz in the top of the seventh to extend the game. With one out, freshman Tami Hill (San Diego, Calif.) reached on a bunt infield single. After the second out, Sainz stepped up and drilled a two-run home run over the right centerfield wall to tie the game.
Pittsburgh completed the sweep in the bottom of the eighth inning on a walk-off RBI single by Christa Hunter. The Panthers put runners on first and second with no outs on a walk and a fielders choice and Hunter followed with a single up the middle to drive in the winning run.
The Red Storm return home on Tuesday, April 20 for a doubleheader vs. Long Island, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
