Port Washington, N.Y. - The St. John's women's golf team won first ever golf tournament, carding a final round 17-over par 305 at the Hofstra Invitational. The Red Storm finished forty-one shots ahead of second place Long Island University. The St. John's men's golf team was also victorious winning their first event of the season, shooting a final round 12-over par 300, six strokes ahead of Siena College.
The St. John's women finished the tournament in grand fashion by placing one thru five on the leaderboard. Sophomore Christin Thomson (Ontario, Canada) became only the second woman to win a tournament at St. John's, carding a final round three-over par 75. The Red Storm rounded out the top five with another great team performance. Junior Jaclyn Sanders (Ontario, Canada) shot a final round six-over par 78 and finished second for the tournament. Sophomore Maggie Steciuk (London, Ontario) finished the day in third place, shooting a four-over par 76. Junior Jennifer Rhee (Rydal, Pa.)shot a season best four-over par 76 to finish fourth and sophomore Katie Lebel (Ontario, Canada) carded an 11-over par 83 to round out the top five.
With a tremendous overall team effort the St. John's men overcame a one stroke deficit entering the final round to win the Hofstra Invitational by six shots for their first win of the season. The Red Storm were led by sophomore John Stoltz (Middletown, N.Y.) who carded a one-over par 145 for the tournament, finishing in first place for his first career title. Sophomore Tom Travalja (Oradell, N.J.) shot a two-over par 74 and finished in second place three shots behind his teammate. Finishing in fourth place was sophomore Brain McArdle (Huntington, N.Y.) who carded a final round three-over par 75. Junior Ian Middleton (British Columbia, Canada) , shot a eight-over par 80 and freshman<<b> Joe Yastrub (Lake Grove, N.Y.) shot a seven-over par 79.
The Red Storm men's golf team will return to action this Friday, April 9th when they participate in the Princeton Invitational, while the women will practice and get ready for the BIG EAST Championship on April 24-25.
