Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The St. John's University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Marist this afternoon to even their overall record up at 15-15. In game one, the Red Storm used three home runs and a season-high 10 strikeouts by freshman Brittany Crouch (Irvine, Calif.) to shutout the Red Foxes, 8-0. Sophomore Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) went 3-for-4, including her sixth home run of the season, with two RBI, while juniors Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) and Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) each added two-run home runs. In the finale, the Red Storm bats remained hot as they rolled past Marist, 9-1 in six innings. Sherlock and freshman Christina Tucker (San Diego, Calif.) went 4-for-4 in the game, as Sherlock added her second home run of the afternoon. With the two losses, Marist falls to 6-27 on the season.
The Red Storm jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one. After the inning's second out, Sainz drilled a two-run home run to center to give St. John's the lead.
St. John's added to the lead in the top of the second inning, as they expanded it to 5-0. With two outs, Crouch and sophomore Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) hit back-to-back doubles to score one run. After a single and stolen base by Oliver put runners on second and third, Hill lined a two-RBI single to right field.
Sherlock led off the fifth inning with her sixth home run of the season to deep centerfield to give St. John's a 6-0 lead.
The Red Storm topped off their scoring in top of the seventh as Sandoval hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to deep center. Sherlock led off the inning with a double over the right fielder's head and remained there with two outs until she scored on Sandoval's home run.
Crouch went five innings for the win, allowing only one hit and walking two, as she improved to 5-9 on the season. Junior Katie Watson (Avondale, Ariz.) completed the shutout, going the last two innings, allowing only one runner to reach base on a hit by pitch.
St. John's jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two. Oliver reached on a throwing error by the pitcher as she moved up to second on the play. With one out, Sherlock reached on an infield single, moving Oliver to third. With Sainz at the plate, the Red Storm attempted a double steal, with Oliver safely scoring as Sherlock got into a rundown.
The Red Storm lead grew to 2-0 in the top of the second, as they took advantage of two Marist errors to plate a run. Tucker led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved up to third as classmate Loren Anguiano (Mesa, Ariz.) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Next batter, sophomore Carrie Kester (Farmington, N.M.) scored Tucker as she reached on an error by the second baseman.
Three runs in the top of the third inning increased the lead to 5-0. Oliver led off the inning by reaching on an error by the second baseman and moved up to third on a throwing error by the catcher and a ground out. Sherlock began a stretch of four straight hits for the Red Storm as she drove in Oliver with a single through the right side. Sainz and Tucker followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to top off the scoring in the third. The lead continued to grow as Oliver hit her first career home run in the top of the fourth inning, a solo shot over the left centerfield wall.
Marist put across their first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth, as they compiled three straight singles with two out to cut the deficit to 6-1. Christine Jakobsen topped off the stretch as she drove in Alison Bartley with a single into right field.
St. John's responded with two more runs of their own in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 8-1. Tucker and Anguiano led off the inning with singles and Kester followed with a ground ball to shortstop. However, the shortstop went to third but threw the ball into the Marist dugout, allowing Tucker to score and the runners to move up to second and third. Marical would plate Anguiano on a sacrifice fly to center for the Red Storm's eighth run.
Sherlock would top off the scoring on the afternoon for St. John's as she led off the seventh inning with her second home run of the afternoon and seventh of the season.
Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) won her seventh straight decision as she improved to 7-1 on the season. Fitzgerald went four innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out three.
