St. John’s Drops Series Opener at Villanova

The Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow from Villanova Softball Complex
VILLANOVA, Pa. — The St. John's softball team fell to Villanova, 7-2, on Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game BIG EAST series at the Villanova Softball Complex.
The Red Storm (32-21, 9-13 BIG EAST) scored two runs on nine hits but could not overcome a five-run second inning by the Wildcats.
Sarah Post led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while Elanna Lysiak recorded a triple and scored a run. Cassidy Stouffer drove in a run, and London Slade added an RBI. Madison Konopka also tallied a hit and scored in the contest. Jess Bianco added a hit, tying her own program record for most hits in a season with 74.
Post's outing marked her fifth multi-hit game of her redshirt sophomore campaign.
In the circle, Ana Serafinko allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out 11, producing her 10th game of the season with double-digit strikeouts. Avery Neuman provided relief, tossing 0.2 scoreless innings.
St. John's struck first in the second inning. Lysiak led off with a triple before Post doubled to left field. Stouffer then brought home Lysiak with a sacrifice bunt to give the Johnnies a 1-0 lead.
Villanova responded in the bottom half with a five-run inning. The Wildcats used a two-run triple and a run-scoring single before adding another RBI triple. Villanova capitalized on a St. John's error later in the inning to extend the advantage to 5-1.
The Red Storm threatened in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Post and Stouffer but were unable to push a run across.
Villanova added two insurance runs in the sixth inning, using a bunt single, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-1.
St. John's mounted a late push in the seventh. Konopka doubled to center field before Jess Bianco reached on a bunt single. Slade followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 7-2, but the Johnnies were unable to bring the tying run to the plate.
