QUEENS, N.Y. - After being named the BIG EAST's Goalkeeper of the Week earlier in the day, sophomore Jason Landers (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) was named BigAppleSoccer.com's men's college player of the week on Monday, as released by the web publication. Landers became the second St. John's player to earn the award this season, joining forward Matt Groenwald, who won the award the third week of the season.
Landers posted his seventh and eighth shutouts of the season, the last six of which being consecutive, to lead the third-ranked Red Storm to conference victories over Syracuse and No. 17 Cincinnati. He turned away six shots during the week, including four at Cincinnati - his second-highest career saves total in a BIG EAST game (five at then-No. 12 UConn, 9/23). The final two of his saves in the game came in the final 10 minutes to preserve the team's 1-0 lead.
It has been over 587 minutes since Landers has surrendered a goal, a six-plus game streak that has seen him turn away 14 consecutive shots. His shutout against the 17th-ranked Bearcats on Saturday, his eighth of the season, pulled him into a tie for 10th place on the school's single-season shutouts list. His shutout percentage of .727 (8 SHO in 11 games) is the highest of any goalkeeper on the list, and his 0.35 goals against average would be the lowest in school history.
Landers and the Red Storm return to the pitch on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in a Top-Five match-up with No. 2/2 Akron, which comes into the game undefeated at 11-0-0.
