QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team took its second NCAA win when it hosted the Tillinghast Oct. 17 and 18. The Red Storm carded a 591 for the two rounds, securing first place with three of the top four finishers.
Sophomore Keegan Bradley (Jackson Hole, Wyo.) was back at work in round two, coming from behind to take first place. Sitting at fourth place in the first round, he shot a one-over par 71 on Tuesday and finished with 144 strokes. This is the third time during the fall season that Bradley has been the top-finisher for the Red Storm and second time that he has captured first place.
Coming in close behind Bradley were sophomore George Zolotas (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Velardo (Wilmington, Mass.) tying for second place. After leading in day one, Zolotas shot a 76 while Velardo recorded a one-over par 71 to finish with 147 strokes. The duo shared the No. 2 spot with St. Thomas Aquinas's Patrick Cibirka.
Rounding out the finishers for the Red Storm was senior Brian McArdle (Huntington, N.Y.). McArdle carded a 76 in day two, coming in tied for 15th. The team faced a slight setback during the Tillinghast, losing freshman Casey Calmi (Douglaston Manor, N.Y.) in the second round to a wrist injury.
Taking second place overall was Villanova, who recorded 602 strokes with four top-20 performances. The University of Cinncinnati secured third with the fifth place finish of Geoff Newman. Gonzaga took fourth place with a 619, one less stroke than fifth place Iona College.
The Red Storm will enjoy a ten day hiatus from play until the BIG EAST-MAC Challenge Nov. 5-6 in Orlando, Fla.
