Conway, SC - Behind a complete game four hitter by sophomore Brittany Crouch (Irvine, CA) and home runs by classmates Christina Tucker (San Diego, CA) and Loren Anguiano (Mesa, AZ), first year head coach Debbie DeJong picked up her first career victory as the Red Storm beat Appalachian State, 7-1 in the first game of the Coastal Carolina Softball Triple Play Weekend. St. John's improves to 1-0, while the Mountaineers fall to 3-9.
The Red Storm provided themselves with all the runs they needed in the top of the first, as they put up four runs, highlighted by Tucker's three-run home run. Junior Megan Oliver (Endicott, NY), sophomore Tami Hill (San Diego, CA) and junior Jo Sherlock (San Diego, CA) led off the game with three straight singles, the final resulting in an RBI for Sherlock. After the inning's first out, Tucker drill the ball over the left-center field fence for her first home run of the season.
Anguiano added to the lead in the top of the second inning, as she followed a leadoff double by Crouch with a home run over the left center field fence for a 6-0 lead.
Appalachian State got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Red Storm kept the margin at six runs as they added another run in the top of the fourth. Tucker led off with a double to center and two batters later, junior Leigh Carlson (Howland, OH) also doubled, this time down the right field line to drive in Tucker.
Both pitchers would hold the opposition scoreless the rest of the way, including Meredith O'Conner retired last eight Red Storm batters.
Crouch allowed only one unearned run on four hits and three walks, while striking out nine, over her seven innings of work.
Every starter picked up at least one hit in the season opener, led by two hits by Tucker, who also added two runs scored and three RBI.
