Fresno, CA - The St. John's University softball team dropped their first game of the 2005 Bulldog Classic this morning, as they fell to Santa Clara, 2-1. The Broncos even their record at 9-9, while the Red Storm fall to 6-6.
The Broncos opened up an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on doubles by Jenny Brown, to lead off the inning, and Kate Goethals, to drive home Brown.
St. John's had their first scoring opportunity in the top of the third inning, but would leave the bases loaded. The Red Storm would come back, however, in the next inning to tie the game at one. Junior Leigh Carlson (Howland, OH) accounted for the run as she hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring senior Allina Sainz (San Diego, CA) who led off the inning with a single to center.
Santa Clara would plate the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fourth as Jillian Cassel came around to score, after a double earlier in the inning, on a throwing error by senior Jillian Sandoval (Orange, CA).
Freshman Lisa Geer (Anaheim, CA) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Red Storm was she went four innings, allowing two runs, only one earned, on five hits and one walk, while striking out one. Sophomore Brittany Crouch (Irvine, CA) pitched the last two innings, allowing only one base runner reach via an error.
St. John's continues play at the 2005 Bulldog Classic later today as they take on tournament host, Fresno State at 8 pm (EST).
