Queens, NY - The St. John's women's basketball team will head to Hartford, CT for the first round of the 2005 BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, March 5. The Red Storm, who finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the BIG EAST, drew the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 Seton Hall (14-13, 6-10) in the first round at 2 pm.
After opening the year with a perfect 11-0 non-conference record, the Red Storm went on to win seven BIG EAST conference games, the most since winning seven in 1998-99. St. John's No. 8 seed is the highest for the Red Storm since they were No. 5 in 1995.
The Red Storm have made an impressive turnaround under the guidance of third year head coach Kim Barnes Arico and return to the BIG EAST Tournament for the second-straight season, after missing the field for the two previous years. St. John's 18 wins this season tie the win total for the last two years. The Red Storm peaked this year with votes in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA polls and gained more nationally recognition when they beat then No. 16 Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
St. John's and Seton Hall split their two meetings this year. Each team won at their home court, with the Red Storm picking up a 61-50 win in the first meeting on January 12 and the Pirates winning their home game at Walsh Gymnasium 54-73 on January 29.
