Queens, NY - After dropping the opening game, 7-3, the St. John's University softball team brought out the bats in the second game, knocking off defending BIG EAST Tournament champion Seton Hall, 10-1 in five innings. Senior Allina Sainz (San Diego, CA) and sophomore Christina Tucker (San Diego, CA) combined to go 5-for-6 with two home runs, eight RBI and three runs scored in the game two win. For the season, the Red Storm are now 13-17 and 1-1 in the league, while the Pirates stand at 14-7 and 3-1 in the conference.
After putting across an unearned run in the first inning of game one, the Pirates broke through for three more runs in the top of the third inning to open up a 4-0 lead. RBI doubles by Laura Taylor and Jenna Best, along with a sacrifice fly by Danielle Steinseifzer accounted for the three Seton Hall runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, St. John's finally got to Seton Hall starter Megan Meyer for three runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. With one out, junior Jessica Marical (Stanton, CA) dropped down a bunt single and was followed by a RBI double into center field by classmate Megan Oliver (Endicott, NY), scoring Marical from first. Oliver would move up to third on the throw home and score on the next batter, as sophomore Loren Anguiano (Mesa, AZ) dropped a single down the right field line. Fellow sophomore Tami Hill (San Diego, CA) posted the fourth-straight Red Storm hit as she lined a double to left center. On the play, the ball was thrown away by the centerfielder, allowing Anguiano to score, but Hill would be thrown out at third, ending the scoring rally.
However, the Pirates would put the game away in the top of the seventh, on a three-run home run by Laura Taylor for what would be a 7-3 final.
In game two, Seton Hall again got on the board first, on a RBI double by Danielle Steinseifzer in the top of the third, but the Red Storm this time would not let the lead stay, as they scored 10 unanswered runs on their way to the split.
In the bottom of the third, St. John's responded by scoring seven runs before having an out recorded, topped off by Tucker's fourth home run of the season. Oliver began the inning with a double to left center and Anguiano followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt. However, the ball was thrown away by the catcher, allowing Oliver to score and Anguiano to move up to second. She would not remain there long as Hill followed with a RBI double down the left field line. A walk to Jo Sherlock (San Diego, CA) and a single through the right side by Jillian Sandoval (Orange, CA) loaded the bases. Sainz laced a double to left center to score two and Tucker followed with a three-run blast over the center field fence to open up the 7-1 lead.
A home run in the bottom of the fourth by Sainz, her first of the season, resulted in three more runs, pushing the score to 10-1 and forcing the game to be stopped after the top of the fifth inning.
Senior Meghan Allman (San Diego, CA) picked up the win, going the first three, allowing one run on three hits and three walks, while also striking out three. Sophomore Brittany Crouch (Irvine, CA) closed out the game, allowing only one hit over the final two innings.
For the doubleheader, five Red Storm batters went 3-for-6, including Anguiano, who also scored three runs. Sainz drive in a career-high five runs in game two, along with scoring two times on the day.
St. John's returns to the field on Wednesday, April 6 for a single game at Fairfield, beginning at 3:30 pm. Monday's scheduled home doubleheader with Sacred Heart has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts for the Pioneers.
