Fairfield, CT - After a season-high 15 hit explosion in game one, the St. John's University softball team only managed three hits in the second game, as the Red Storm split a non-league doubleheader at Fairfield this afternoon at Alumni Softball Field. St. John's (14-18 overall) took game one, 8-2, led behind a 4-for-4 performance by senior Jillian Sandoval (Orange, CA), who added her third home run of the season, along with scoring three times and driving home two. The Stags (12-14) responded to take the finale, 7-1, as they posted six runs in the second inning.
Both teams posted single runs in the first inning of game two, beginning with a RBI double off the left centerfield fence by junior Jo Sherlock (San Diego, CA).
The Red Storm retook the lead and held it for good when Sandoval led off the top of the second with a home run over the left field fence.
St. John's would add to the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Christina Tucker (San Diego, CA) and junior Leigh Carlson (Howland, OH). Carlson would expand the lead to 5-1 with another RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
After a solo home run by Cagney Ringnalda in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Storm posted three more runs in the top of the seventh for the 8-2 final. Three straight RBI hits by St. John's with two outs accounted for the runs, beginning with a RBI single to center by Sandoval, followed by consecutive run scoring doubles by Tucker and Carlson.
Sophomore Brittany Crouch (Irvine, CA) pitched five innings in the win, scattering five hits and allowing only one run, while striking out three Stags. Aside from Sandoval's four hit effort, Tucker and Carlson each added three hits, while sophomore Tami Hill (San Diego, CA) and Sherlock had two. Carlson also drove in a team-high three runs.
In game two, the Red Storm again jumped out to an early lead, this time in the second inning as sophomore Loren Anguiano (Mesa, AZ) drilled her fourth home run of the season down the left field line.
However, the Stags would come back to score all they would need in the bottom of the inning as they posted six runs, behind five hits and three St. John's errors. Riannon Thomas provided the game-winning hit as she began the scoring with a two-RBI double to right center. Fairfield would later add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth for the would-be 7-1 final.
Freshman Lisa Geer (Anaheim, CA) pitched well in relief, allowing only one run on two hits over the final four innings, while striking out six.
The Red Storm return to Red Storm Field and BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, April 9, as they host Syracuse at noon. The next day, St. John's will battle Boston College, in another doubleheader beginning at noon.
