Queens, NY - The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 2005-06 home and away opponents for the women's basketball season. As of July 1, 2005 the league will expand to 16 teams, with the addition of Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette and South Florida and the departure of Boston College.
The league's new format will continue with 16 conference games each season, however, beginning in the 2005-06 season, each team will face seven opponents home only, seven opponents away only and one opponent both home and away, a repeat opponent. Each member will have a total of eight home and eight away games.
St. John's schedule for the upcoming season includes home contests with Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, South Florida, Villanova and West Virginia. The Red Storm's road schedule will feature Cincinnati, Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Providence, Rutgers and Syracuse. St. John's lone repeat opponent will be Marquette.
In 2004-05, the BIG EAST conference saw had four teams finish in the Associated Press and USA Today-ESPN-WBCA top-25 polls. In addition, Rutgers advanced to the NCAA Championship Elite 8 and Connecticut was ranked No. 10/10. The Huskies and the Scarlet Knights will play each other twice in 2005-06. Notre Dame, ranked No. 11/15 at the conclusion of last season, will face DePaul, a constant in the top 25 during the 2004-05 season twice next year.
St. John's is coming off of its best season in 17 years, having won 20 games and advanced to the second round of the WNIT Postseason tournament. After a perfect non-conference season last year, which included a win over ACC power Georgia Tech, the Red Storm received votes in both polls in late December.
