Queens, NY - St. John's University is one of five institutions nationally to receive the National Basketball Association's Player Development Service Award. The award sponsored by the NBA recognizes programs and individuals who provide innovative educational programming and support services with special focus on assisting men's basketball student-athletes.
Eric Rienecker, Associate Director accepted the award, which was presented at the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) National Convention in Raleigh, N.C. Rienecker just completed his 2nd year with the university and is currently the academic advisor for the men's basketball program. He is also responsible for day-to-day supervision of the academic support area.
The Student Development for Athletes program provides a wide range of services from the recruiting stage through graduation. The program focuses on four key areas for success: academic support, career development, personal development, and community service.
"It is certainly an honor to receive this recognition," says Associate Vice President Dr. Nancy Kaplan. "It is a tribute to all our staff, coaches, and administrators who work very hard to support the total development of our student-athletes."
St. John's University received the honor over all institutions in region one, which is comprised of colleges and universities in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.
The four other institutions honored with the award are Texas Tech, the University of Kentucky, Purdue University and the University of Southern California.
