Queens, NY - St. John's University head women's basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico announced the hiring of Joe Tartamella as assistant coach. Tartamella is no stranger to the program as he served as a graduate assistant coach during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons while working toward his master's degree in marketing management.
"As a graduate assistant, Joe demonstrated the kind of character, work ethic and commitment to excellence that we would like to instill in our players at St. John's," said Barnes Arico. "It was great that we had the opportunity to bring Joe back full-time as a member of our staff."
With five years of Division I experience and three years of coaching experience under his belt, Tartamella hopes to help coach the St. John's women's basketball team to another successful season. Last season the Red Storm finished with a 20-11 record, the program's best mark in 17 years.
"I am very excited to return to St. John's University," said Tartamella. "Coach Barnes Arico has done a tremendous job in her three years here and I look forward to working with her and the staff once again."
Tartamella spent the last year as an assistant men's basketball coach under the direction of head coach Tom Spina at SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck, NY. Some of his responsibilities included aiding in recruiting, developing and implementing long and short-range strategies and game plans, administering game plans to players for execution in practice and games, and organizing and implementing pre- and postseason conditioning programs. Tartamella also served as the Assistant Director of Career Services at SUNY Maritime College.
Tartamella received his bachelor of business administration in Marketing Information Systems from James Madison University in 2001.
