Queens, NY--Tonight CSTV will air the St. John's vs. Notre Dame contest that was played Friday night at Belson Stadium. The game will air at 8 p.m. with an encore presentation at 11 p.m. The match will also air Wednesday, Sept. 21 at noon and Thursday, Sept. 22 at 2 a.m.
Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, IL) scored two goals to lead the No. 10 Red Storm to a convincing 2-1 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame. With this win, St. John's improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
Nearly thirteen minutes into the contest, St. John's Garry Lewis (Orange Park, FL) passed the ball to Groenwald, who dribbled it ahead of the field. Groenwald then drilled the ball past Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Cahill from the right side of the box for 1-0 lead. Then at the 53:40 mark in the game, Groenwald connected for his second goal and made the score 2-0, this time beating Cahill from the left side of the field. The goals were Groenwald's third and fourth of the season.
The Red Storm's defense dominated the entire contest, allowing just five Fighting Irish shots in the match. In the second half, St. John's did not allow one shot until there was 18 minutes left on the clock.
Meanwhile on offense, the Red Storm had 17 shots, eight in the first half and nine in the second. Groenwald led the team with four shots while Lewis, Andre Schmid (Sacramento, CA) and Jeff Stepan (Fremont, CA) were right behind him with three shots each.
Notre Dame's only goal was ruled a St. John's own goal when a pass from Notre Dame's Joe Lapira was deflected off of St. John's defender Sam Matthews (Auckland, N.Z.) into the goal to make the score 2-1.
