Men's Golf Finishes Second at Rutgers Invitational

Queens, NY - The St. John's men's golf team took second place at the Rutgers Invitational over the weekend in its first fall match of the season. The Red Storm finished with 856 strokes and a strong showing by its freshman.
Freshman Kevin Velardo (Willmington, MA/Willmington) was the top finisher for the Red Storm, securing fifth place. He ended the weekend one under par, shooting 72 on Friday, 69 on Saturday and 71 on Sunday.
George Zolotas (Peabody, MA/St. John's), also a freshman, came in tied for seventh place with a total of 214 strokes. Finishing the weekend one over par, he shot 71, 70 and 73, respectively.
Also finishing in the top 20 for the Red Storm were sophomore Keegan Bradley (Jackson Hole, WY/Hopkinson) and senior Brian McArdle (Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's). Bradley completed the invitational three over par while McArdle was four over par. Freshman Casey Calmi (Douglaston Manor, NY/St. Mary's) came in at a six-way tie for 25th and seven over par.
"The Rutgers event was a great start for our new team," said head coach Frank Darby. "We showed a lot of people that we have a tremendous amount of fire power. I'm really proud of the way our guys played."
The Red Storm will host the McLaughlin at the Bethpage course on September 23 and 24 in its second match of the season.
