PHILADELPHIA - Three players from the St. John's University men's soccer team were selected in the MLS SuperDraft on Friday in Philadelphia. Matt Groenwald was the Red Storm's top pick, as he was chosen in the third round by the Kansas City Wizards. Andre Schmid was also chosen in the third round by Houston, while Jeff Carroll was a fourth-round pick of DC United.
The 28th pick overall by Kansas City and third in the third round, Groenwald finished his career with 15 goals and 22 assists for 53 points, including a team-leading 17 points in 2005. He was named to NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Times All-America teams at the conclusion of the season, after earning first-team All-BIG EAST and first-team Academic All-America honors throughout the year. He was a first-team All-BIG EAST and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in each of his last three seasons at St. John's, and a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy in each of his last two seasons.
The 32nd pick overall by Houston and eighth in the third round, Schmid finished a dynamic four-year career with 16 goals, 15 assists and 47 points. A starter in at least 20 games in three straight seasons, Schmid racked up at least 12 points in each of those seasons and averaged over five goals, four assists and 15 points per year. He finished second on the team with two game-winning goals, third with four goals and 12 points and tied for first with 50 shots.
The 39th pick overall by DC United and third in the fourth round, Carroll was a starter in all 22 of the team's games this past season and in 84 games for his career. Carroll has been a key to one of the most dominant defensive eras in school history. The St. John's defense has recorded 10 or more shutouts in four straight seasons since Carroll's freshman season in 2002, and three teams over that same time frame rank among the top 10 defensive teams in school history, in terms of goals allowed.
