QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team has six freshmen on its 2006 squad. As a rookie, there is a lot to learn, a lot to experience and a lot of firsts. Jessica Foley, Lauren Lupinetti, Alyssa Clark, Ashley Basilicato, Roxann Struble and Melissa Pilley will take RedStormSports.com along with them for the ride. In installment one of "Rookie Diary," Jessica Foley will talk about her first time out on the mound, the road trip and life in New York.

Hey St. John's Softball Fans,
My name is Jessica Foley and I am a freshman pitcher for the St. John's softball team. I am originally from Orange County, California.
This weekend at the Triangle Classic, I started in my first collegiate game for the Red Storm. I was really nervous to start on the mound but during warm-ups, the seniors were really encouraging and helped me calm down. This group has been really supportive and showed me that they had confidence in me once I was in the circle. Getting out on the mound and pitching well during the first inning really built my confidence throughout the game. I pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five, helping the team secure our first win of the season over Gardner-Webb, 7-5.
My first road trip with team was a lot of fun. The bus ride to North Carolina was really long but we made the best out of it by singing karaoke, eating and watching movies. We haven't (the team) had to all be together as a group for a long amount of time yet, so this was a really good bonding experience for us. We had a really great time on the trip but wish we could have played the rest of our games at the Triangle Classic.
So far, being in New York and a part of St. John's has been great. I love being a part of the team and experiencing life on the east coast. It's definitely different than California, having four seasons instead of two. The blizzard last weekend was a crazy experience but also a lot of fun. I'm really glad I made the decision to come out here.
Next week, we will head to Florida for the Florida International Tournament. I can't wait for our next trip and another opportunity to get out on the mound.
Thanks and Go Red Storm!
Jess Foley, #14
