QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team has six freshmen on its 2006 squad. As a rookie, there is a lot to learn, a lot to experience and a lot of firsts. Jessica Foley, Lauren Lupinetti, Alyssa Clark, Roxann Struble, Ashley Basilicato and Melissa Pilley will take RedStormSports.com along with them for the ride. In installment two of "Rookie Diary," Lauren Lupinetti will talk about hitting her first career home run, being named to the Adidas Golden Panther All-Tournament team and adjusting to life in New York.
Hey St. John's Softball Fans:
My name is Lauren Lupinetti and I am freshman infielder for the St. John's softball team. I am originally from Long Beach, Calif.
This past weekend at the Adidas Golden Panther Invitational, I hit my first career home run. It was in a game against Memphis when they were beating us 7-2. It felt really good to give my team a lift and encourage them to keep on fighting. Throughout the rest of the games, I tried to be aggressive at the plate and make things happen for our team. I was really excited to find out that I was named to the Golden Panther All-Tournament team. It was an honor to be recognized as a freshman and represent my team among the other schools competing.
I have had the opportunity so far to start at first base and behind the plate. Catching was new to me because I have never caught in a game situation before, but I am willing to do whatever the team needs me to in order for us to get a win. I had to learn a lot of new things but I hope I proved myself to my teammates a little bit this weekend, coming through in tough situations.
Another big change I am adjusting well to is moving across the country to the New York. At first I was really home sick and I missed my family a lot, but the team has made me feel like I have family in New York now too. Being a member of the softball team made the transition to college a lot easier!
We're really excited to see what our team can do this season and can't wait to get back out next week against Stetson.
Thanks and Go Red Storm!
Lauren Lupinetti, #26
