TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The Red Storm started out the day with a tough loss to No. 25 North Carolina, 6-0. But St. John's used a late seventh inning rally to beat Troy and keep its tournament contention alive. In danger of elimination from its bracket, the team came from behind and scored six runs in one inning.
Game One: St. John's vs. No. 25 North Carolina, L 6-0
St. John's came up empty handed against nationally ranked North Carolina. The Red Storm managed eight hits but stranded 10 as the Tarheels Amber Johnson shut out the offense and improved her record to 5-0.
Freshman Lauren Lupinetti had the most success off of Johnson, going 3-for-3. The heart of the lineup for St. John's each got a hit andBionka King posted her first stolen base of the season but the Red Storm was not able to fit the pieces together.
Sophomore Lisa Geer struggled in the first two innings and was replaced by Kim Lerch. Lerch was solid on the mound and did not give up an earned run for the remainder of the game. She has appeared in three consecutive games for the Red Storm, posting a 0.47 ERA over 15 innings.
Game Two: St. John's vs. Troy, W 7-2
The Red Storm came from behind to score six runs in the top of the seventh inning and defeat the Troy Trojans, 7-2. St. John's batted around in the seventh and handed Troy's Laine Harcourt her sixth loss of the season.
The late rally started with a walk to Danielle Estrada and a double from Megan Oliver. Jo Sherlock then reached on an error by the second baseman. Lupinetti and Loren Anguiano both singled in the next at bats and Roxann Struble worked the count for the second walk of the inning. Tami Hill, who started the top of the seventh with a groundout to the second baseman, got her turn to drive in a run when she singled to center field, making the score 7-2.
Freshman Jessica Foley earned her fourth win of the season and was efficient over seven innings. She worked her way in and out of trouble throughout the game and allowed only two earned runs off of six hits.
The Red Storm will play North Florida in an elimination game on March 12 at 9:30 a.m. If the team advances to the next round, it will play its final game of the Florida State Invitational at 12 p.m. and conclude a nine day, 15 game trip.
