QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team earned its first two home wins of the season with a pair of victories over St. Francis. The Red Storm scored 18 runs off of 25 hits in the double header, taking both wins in no more than six innings.
Junior Loren Anguiano set the tone for game one when she crushed the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a grand slam in the first inning. It was the first grand slam of Anguiano's career as well as her first homer of the season. She finished game one with a double, four RBI and two runs.
After earning her first career home run only two games ago, senior Jessica Marical connected for number two of the year. The two run homer put St. John's up 9-0 in the bottom of the third.
Lauren Lupinetti helped finish off the Terriers with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Terriers only run of the game came in the top of the fourth when Tonianne Campuzano doubled to right field, scoring Janine Valentin. It would be the only run St. Francis would put up in two games against St. John's.
In the circle, junior Kim Lerch got the job done once again. She allowed only one earned run, striking out five over five innings and earning her fifth victory of the season.
The home run derby continued into the second game of the day against St. Francis as Anguiano and Lupinetti were back to work at the plate. The duo put up home runs in the same inning, just three batters apart, in a five run bottom of the fifth for St. John's.
Offensively, the Red Storm was solid all around, receiving contributions from eight of its nine batters in the lineup. Freshman Roxann Struble finished game two with two RBI and was 3-for3 at the plate. Seniors Blair Belloni and Jo Sherlock were both 2-for-3 with Sherlock scoring two runs.
Sophomore Lisa Geerwas solid on the mound, shutting out St. Francis's offense through four and striking out four. Jessica Foley came in to pitch the final two innings and fanned four with no walks and no runs for a complete game shutout.
The Red Storm will look to take its two game home winning streak into a double header against Yale on Sunday, March 19 at 12 p.m.
