Hello St. John's fans! The women's basketball team began its trip to the national tournament Friday when its bus pulled out of campus and headed to State College, Pa., for the Red Storm's first-round matchup with California. St. John's is making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1988 and is looking to continue an already exciting and successful season.
The team got a great send-off, as members of the pep band and spirit squad, as well as students, faculty and staff gathered outside of Taffner Field House to wish them good luck.
Mercedes Dukes led the team in a thank you dance to all the fans, and the Red Storm boarded the bus for the five-hour trip. Check out pictures from the send-off HERE.
Thanks to everyone who sent us out in style!
On the bus, the group watched a special on the 1985 Villanova men's basketball national championship team, which upset heavily favored Georgetown to win college basketball's biggest prize. Everyone got a kick of the old-school footage, and St. John's squads that Chris Mullin played on and Lou Carnesecca coached were featured. Coach Carnesecca was also one of the speakers on the documentary.
After that, there was a spirited showing of "Walk The Line," the Johnny Cash biopic starring recent Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix as the `Man in Black'.
Upon arrival at the hotel in State College, there was just enough time to get settled before the team headed to dinner. Meetings and film followed and everyone is looking to get a good night's rest for a big day tomorrow.
