Softball Welcomes Yale In Sunday Doubleheader

QUEENS, N.Y. -
• The St. John's softball team will welcome Yale in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Red Storm Field.
• The two teams split a pair of games at Yale during their last meeting on March 30, 2005. Both contests were close as the Red Storm took a 2-0 win in game one. Yale came back to edge St. John's 2-1 in the second game.
• Yale holds a two game advantage over the Red Storm in the all-time series, 11-9-1.
Home Runs Plentiful In 2006 Home Opener
• The Red Storm opened its home season with a pair of wins over St. Francis, 10-1 and 8-0. St. John's scored 18 runs off of 25 hits and took both wins in no more than six innings.
• The team posted five home runs over two games with both Loren Anguiano and Lauren Lupinetti hitting two a piece. Jessica Marical connected for her second homer of her career. She recorded her first home run only two games earlier against North Florida at the Florida State Invitational.
• All three Red Storm pitchers saw action in the doubleheader. Kim Lerch got the win in game one, her fifth of the season, allowing only one earned run over five innings. Sophomore Lisa Geer tossed four scoreless innings before freshman Jessica Foley came in as relief. Foley struck out four over the final two innings.
NOTING THE RED STORM
Softball Players Earn Weekly Honors
• Megan Oliver, Lauren Lupinetti and Kim Lerch were named to the BIG EAST's honor roll for the week of March 13. It was Lupinetti's second mention in the first four weeks of the season and the fourth consecutive week a St. John's softball player had been recognized by the conference.
• Lupinetti posted a .444 batting average with five runs, 16 hits, nine RBI and one home run. The three-run homer came in a game against No. 17 Nebraska at the Florida State Invitational. Oliver secured her spot on the list after hitting .371 at the plate with eight runs, 13 hits, three RBI. In the circle, Lerch finished the week with an ERA of 0.62., earning four wins and striking out 21 over 31 innings.
• Lupinetti was also named to the Florida State all-tournament team. She hit .500 over the six game tournament, driving in five runs with a double, a home run and two runs scored.
Red Storm Concludes Spring Break Trip
• The St. John's softball team returned from a nine day, 13 game trip with seven wins and six losses. After dropping three to Stetson in the first weekend, the Red Storm stepped it up and posted a 7-3 week.
• While playing No. 17 Nebraska in game one of the Florida State Invitational, the Red Storm got nine hits off of the Huskers and scored six runs. The only other team to do better offensively against the team was Sanford.
• Highlights included a 10-0 win over Boston College, who was once a BIG EAST rival for St. John's, a two game sweep at Bethune-Cookman and finishing second overall at the Florida State Tournamnet in the silver bracket.
SCOUTING YALE
• Yale split two games with Manhattan on Saturday, March 18. Three Bulldogs belted home runs in second game of the day, giving Yale the win 9-1. Christina Guerland, Megan Enyeart and Kathleen Edwards came up with the homers while Rebecca Wojciak earned her team-leading fourth win of the season. During game one, the two teams battled through 10 innings with Manhattan eventually defeating Yale, 4-3.
• Enyeart and Aracelis Torres lead the Bulldogs as the only two players hitting over .300. Both have 16 hits and nine runs in the young season with Enyeart posting a .348 batting average while Torres is hitting .320. The duohave posted seven doubles this season and 15 RBI.
• Wojciak has an ERA of 1.89 over 33.1 innings pitched. She has struck out 24 and walked only 10.
• In the last six meetings between the two teams, the Bulldogs hold a 4-1-1 advantage.
