DELAND, FLA. - The St. John's softball team suffered two tough losses to Stetson University. Costly errors did the Red Storm in the end but the double header featured quality contributions from many different members of the team.
Sophomore Lisa Geer was the starting pitcher in game one and dominated through five innings. The right-hander shutout the Hatters offense over five and finished the game with seven strikeouts, walking only one. She proved to be too much for Stetson's best player, Melissa Wiggins, keeping her hitless throughout the game. In what ended up being a pitchers duel with Stetson's ace Erica Demers, Geer hiccupped first, allowing five runs in the sixth.
Demers went into today's game with a 6-0 record and a 0.72 ERA but freshman Lauren Lupinetti was unfazed by the pitcher and had the most success out of the Red Storm's starting lineup with two hits. Sophomore Danielle Estrada worked Demers in the third and got her to give up her second walk of the season. St. John's ultimately lost the game, 5-0.
The Red Storm's offense broke open early in game two of the day. In the first inning, St. John's put up two runs off of doubles from Estrada and Jo Sherlock and a single from Lupinetti.
Another rookie having a standout day at the plate was Roxann Struble. Struble singled to left field during her first at bat in the second inning and was brought home by a single from Megan Oliver. Struble finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with one run.
Sherlock went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Oliver and Loren Anguiano drove in two runs a piece. Lupinetti again recorded two hits with a run and an RBI but when Stetson's Carrie Cruit tied the score up at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh, the Red Storm came up short in an eighth inning 8-7 loss.
The two teams will meet again in a single game, tomorrow, March 5 at 1 p.m.
