Head coach Dr. Dave Masur and the Red Storm men's soccer team have released the dates on their 2006 season schedule, the university announced on Monday. St. John's begins play with exhibition games on Aug. 18 and 20, before opening the regular season with road games at Michigan on Friday, Aug. 25, and Oakland on Sunday, Aug. 27.
Season and individual game tickets are now available for purchase by following the link above or by calling 1-888-GO-STORM. A special group rate of $3 per ticket is available for groups of 20 or more, and soccer youth team interactive opportunities are available by calling (718) 990-5839.
The Red Storm enters the 2006 season as the nation's only team to have made appearances in the last 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament Rounds of 16. St. John's has participated in the last 14 straight NCAA Tournaments overall, a run that includes a 1996 national championship and College Cup appearances in the 2001 and 2003 seasons.
A tough, eight-team field at the University of Akron's Westfield Insurance Cup pits the Red Storm against some of the nation's premiere collegiate men's soccer programs. St. John's takes on Clemson in the team's exhibition opener on Sunday, Aug. 18, and then plays either Creighton or host Akron on Sunday, Aug. 20. St. John's and its three potential opponents were all among the final 16 teams playing in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
St. John's faces perennial Big Ten power Michigan on Friday, Aug. 25 to kick off the 2006 regular season, and then travels upstate to Rochester, Mich., to play a Sunday, Aug. 27 game at Oakland.
Former BIG EAST foe, Virginia Tech, comes to Queens for an 8 p.m. match at Belson Stadium on Friday, Sept. 1. St. John's then plays host to Marist at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, in a rematch of a 2005 NCAA Tournament first round contest (a 3-1 St. John's win).
A trip to Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 8, is the first of 11 contests on the 2006 BIG EAST Conference schedule. The Red Storm and Pirates play a 3 p.m. day game, after missing each other on the 2005 schedule for the first time in an all-time series that dates back to the 1979 season.
St. John's clashes with rival Connecticut on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., and Providence on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. on the turf of Belson Stadium. The Huskies return 19 letterwinners from last year's BIG EAST Championship team, while the Friars are coming off one of the nation's best turnarounds in 2005.
The Red Storm takes a six-day break, hits the road for a contest at Louisville on Saturday, Sept. 23, and then hosts Syracuse on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 27, to close the month of September.
A non-conference match at Princeton on Wednesday, Oct. 4, represents the first of three straight road games, as the Red Storm also takes on BIG EAST opponents Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 7, and DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The final two games of the 2006 schedule could go a long way in the BIG EAST Conference Red Division standings, as division rivals Villanova (Wednesday, Oct. 18) and South Florida (Saturday, Oct. 21) come to Belson Stadium at the close of the regular season schedule. The Red Storm played both teams tough on the road, falling 1-0 in a pair of October road games last season.
The BIG EAST Conference Tournament begins with first round action on campus sites from Oct. 25-26, and quarterfinal play on campus sites on Oct. 28-29. The tournament semifinals (Friday, Nov. 3) and championship game (Sunday, Nov. 5) are on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
St. John's looks for a 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance when the 2006 championship begins on campus sites on Nov. 10 or 11. Second and third round games (Nov. 15 and Nov. 18 or 19) and the national quarterfinals (Nov. 24-26) will also take place on campus sites, before the College Cup at Robert Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis University from Dec. 1-3.
