The women???s golf team is approaching the upcoming year with a fresh outlook, high expectations and many new faces. With the loss of four senior letterwinners, head coach Ambry Bishop welcomes five freshmen to the team this year.
???I am really excited about the team we have put together this season,??? said Bishop. ???Each of these girls is very talented and has something unique to offer. I expect a lot out of them and can???t wait to get out onto the course.???
Junior Brittany Lambertson is the sole returning player from last year???s squad and will provide leadership to the young team. In her second season with the Red Storm, Lambertson posted three top-10 finishes, helping St. John???s take its first championship of the season with a second place finish at the Hartford Invitational. She competed in all eight events last season and continues to improve her game.
???Brittany had some really great rounds last season and I will look for her to carry that over into this season,??? said Bishop. ???She has a great attitude and work ethic. The younger girls will learn a lot from her.???
The incoming class of 2006 is a solid group of East Coast players ranging from Massachusetts to Florida. Lois Kim, a local talent from the Queens area, has already spent time training under Bishop. She compiled more than 16 individual championship titles over the last four years and competed in many local junior PGA events.
Another exciting prospect is Renee Cloutier. She is a four-time district champion and three-time regional champion. Cloutier went undefeated during her first three seasons with the Niceville Senior Eagles and encountered only one loss during her career. Fellow rookie Ashley Szewczuk also had a District Championship title to her name. She is a two-time state qualifier and three-time Pennsylvania Athletic Conference 10 Champion.
Samantha Tejada and Lauren Milosh have both spent time competing at local junior PGA events around Massachusetts. Milosh was voted team MVP during her junior and senior campaigns and has only one loss after four years of high school. As a senior, Tejada took ninth at the Massachusetts State Championships.
???Each of our incoming freshman has their own set of impressive accomplishments,??? said Bishop. ???I think they will be a great addition not only to our team, but the university as well.???
The Red Storm opens its fall season at the Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 16-17 in Hanover, N.H. St. John???s will continue to compete locally, heading to the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 23-24 and the Yale Fall Intercollegiate on Sept. 30 ??? Oct. 1. 2006 will come to an end at the Shootout at the Legends on Oct. 9-10.
