Red Storm Can't Overcome Vermont In Championship

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Monique McLean and Sky Lindsay each turned in a double-figure scoring contest, but that wasn't enough as St. John's lost to Vermont, 66-48, in the championship game of the TD Banknorth Classic on Sunday afternoon at Patrick Gymnasium.
McLean led the way with 11 points and came close to a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds, while Lindsay added 10 points and four assists.
McLean and Joy McCorvey earned all-tournament honors. McLean led the team in scoring (28) and rebounding (20) in the two games, while McCorvey finished second with 12 rebounds and chipped in 12 points.
The Red Storm (2-1) offense never got into rhythm in the game and Vermont's progressively got better throughout. St. John's shot 28.8 from the field while the Catamounts averaged 38.6, including shooting 50.0 percent in the second half. St. John's also struggled on the boards, pulling down 34 rebounds compared to UVM's 52.
With Vermont in front 8-7, the Catamounts went on an 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead, 16-9. McLean responded for the Red Storm by nailing a three at the 11:19 mark and then two free throws by Angel Tate put the team within four, 18-14.
St. John's continued its momentum and scored four unanswered points thanks to baskets by McLean and McCorvey, tying the score at 18. Shortly after, the Red Storm took its first lead of the game when Lindsay scored on a layup at the 6:59 mark.
The lead didn't last long for the Red Storm as the as the Catamounts went on a 7-0 run to jump ahead 26-20. With Vermont leading 28-21, St. John's closed out the half only down by five when Lindsay hit two free throws in the final seconds, 28-23.
In the second stanza, the Catamounts (3-1) came out strong and built their lead to 10 points. The closest St. John's would come within the lead was by eight points before Vermont jumped out to its largest lead, 64-44 at the 1:54 mark and closed out for the win.
The Red Storm will look to get back on the winning track next Sunday when it hosts Dartmouth in its home opener at Carnesecca Arena. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m.
