Four Named To AVCA All-Northeast Region Team

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Four members of the 2007 Red Storm volleyball team were named to the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) All-Northeast Region Team, the AVCA announced Wednesday. Seniors Hui Ping Huang and Wioleta Leszczynska earn the honor for the second consecutive season, while fellow classmate LaToya Blunt and junior Lena Yee land themselves on the list for the first time in their careers.
Huang, the 2007 BIG EAST Player of the Year, has led the Red Storm offense this season with a remarkable .445 hitting percentage, which ranks fourth in the country. She also has 500 total kills thus far and her 4.63 kills per game ranks 41st in the nation. Huang was name the College Volleyball Update National Player of the Week last week, for her 40-kill, .529 hitting percentage effort in the first two rounds of the NCAA Touranment.
Leszczynska has enjoyed the best season that a Red Storm setter has ever had. She has registered a single-season record 1,699 assists thus far and her 14.28 assists per game ranks second in the country. The Bielsko-Biala, Poland native recorded a career-high 70 assists on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007 in the semifinal match of the BIG EAST Tournament against the University of South Florida and was later named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Blunt earns a spot on the All-Region team for the first time in her four years at St. John's. She has been a standout performer on the court for the Red Storm this season. The senior ranks right behind Huang for second on the team and in the BIG EAST Conference with a .370 hitting percentage. She also earned first team All-BIG EAST accolades for the first time this year.
Yee is also appearing on the All-Region team for the first time in her career. The junior won her second consecutive BIG EAST Libero of the Year award this year after another spectacular season in the Red Storm's backcourt. She leads the team and is third among BIG EAST players with 4.81 digs per game (577 total). The Honolulu, Hawaii native recorded her first 30-dig game of the season in St. John's second round victory over Delaware last Saturday.
Huang, Leszczynska, Blunt, Yee and the rest of the Red Storm take to the court tomorrow in the regional semifinal match-up with the USC Trojans. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the University of Florida's Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
