Red Storm Softball Edged By Towson

Greenville, N.C. ??? The St. John???s softball team closed out its play at the 2007 Baymont Inn & Suites Pirate Classic Sunday, taking a 2-1 loss to Towson in the consolation game. The Red Storm finished the weekend 2-3 overall, coming up with its first two wins of the season against Appalachian State and East Carolina.
The Red Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of three consecutive hits. Senior Loren Anguiano started the offense off with a single to center field and junior Spring Montgomery followed her lead. Sophomore Danielle Estrada came through with a hard hit single to center field that scored Anguiano.
Towson answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Junior pitcher Lisa Geer kept the game close over six innings but the Tigers scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead. Geer allowed only one earned run in her third appearance of the weekend and struck out two.
Over five games this weekend, Anguiano led the team hitting .500 at the plate. She posted seven hits, six runs, two of which were home runs and six RBI. Junior co-captain Bionka King was 5-for-13, starting in left field in all five games. She recorded three runs, two doubles and three RBI. Another notable includes rookie Shauntaine Harris notching her first career home run against Appalachian State.
In the circle, Geer and Kim Lerch each picked up their first wins of the season. Lerch was dominant against East Carolina, limiting them to two earned runs, while Geer struck out 14 batters over 19 innings.
Next up, the Red Storm will head to Texas for its spring break trip. St. John???s will take on the likes of Texas, Texas State and Texas-San Antonio.
