Softball Continues Home Stand With Games Against UConn and Providence

??? The St. John???s softball team will host a pair of BIG EAST conference foes this weekend when it takes on the UConn Huskies, Saturday, March 31, and the Providence Friars, Sunday, April 1. First pitch for both games is scheduled for Noon.
??? The Red Storm is currently riding a two game win streak heading into this weekend???s contests. After playing 25 games on the road, the softball team opened up its home schedule against Rider last Wednesday, cruising to back-to-back to wins over the Broncs, 8-6, and 8-1. St. John???s set a season high in hits during game two, posting 14 and runs with eight. Overall, the Red Storm had 24 hits on the day, including nine doubles and a home run.
??? Last season, St. John???s stole a pair of games from UConn on the Huskie???s home field, 12-9 (10) and 9-6. It was the best offensive production the Red Storm put out all year, recording 19 hits in game one alone and 27 overall. Lisa Geer earned both wins in the circle, striking out three and allowing only four earned runs. Senior Loren Anguiano had a home run against the Huskies, racking up 4 RBI and scoring two runs off of three hits. Junior Danielle Estrada also had great success against UConn came across the plate four times and posted two RBI.
??? Providence and St. John???s split their games last season, as the Red Storm edged the Friars in game one, 2-1. Providence picked up a 3-1 victory in the second game. Anguiano was again offensively solid for the Red Storm as she went 2-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBI. Sophomore Roxann Struble also had two hits and an RBI. St. John???s owns a 37-28 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.

??? St. John???s picked up a pair of much needed wins against the visiting Rider Broncs???s in its home opener. Red Storm pitchers Kim Lerch and Lisa Geer each earned a victory, starting in game one and game two respecitvely.
??? Junior Spring Montgomery enjoyed her best offensive performance of the season over the two games, going 5-for-8 at the plate with three runs, two doubles and an RBI.
??? Sophomore Roxann Struble was also productive with her at bats as she went 3-for-5 with four runs, a double and a home run. Her long-ball was a two-run shot in game two that was hit over the center field fence, which is the farthest distance she could have hit it.
??? Rookie Shauntaine Harris came through with clutch hitting in both games. She had a pair of doubles, three hits, two runs and four RBI, all in breakthrough innings for the Red Storm.
??? The Red Storm recieved contributions from every single member of its starting lineup. Montgomery???s five hits lead the squad while Struble, Harris, Danielle Estrada and Loren Anguiano each had three. Ona Halladay and Bionka King had two a piece.

??? Rookie Brandy Reyes has made an immediate impact at the plate for the Red Storm. She leads her teammates with a .320 batting average, 23 hits and five doubles. Her nine RBI is tied for second best on the team. The freshman showed no sign of nerves in her first weekend of BIG EAST action as she led her team, hitting .500 with a pair of doubles.
??? Senior Loren Anguiano is now second on the team with a .272 batting average. She lead the Red Storm with 15 runs and four home runs and is second in hits (22) and RBI (9). Against Rider, Anguiano recorded three hits, one double and two runs.
??? Co-captain Bionka King has continued her impressive play as the starting left fielder. She is third on the team with a .241 batting average and has 13 hits overall. Tami Hill, who shares captain duties with King, is hitting .235 with six runs, 20 hits and five doubles.
??? Freshman Shauntaine Harris has been solid offensively for the Red Storm as she leads the team with 10 RBI. She connected for her second home run of the season against Texas State and has collected 13 hits, six runs and two doubles. Both of her doubles came against Rider in St. John???s home opening doubleheader.
??? Roxann Struble came up with the biggest hit of her career against No. 24 DePaul, firing a grand slam into the seats in left field. It was the first long-ball of her career and gave her team a 4-0 advantage. She now has four extra-base hits on the season and is second on the team with 7 RBI.
??? In the circle, senior Kim Lerch tossed 10.2 innings in back-to-back games against DePaul in the Red Storm???s first weekend of BIG EAST play . She struck out eight and allowed four runs. She picked up her third win of the season against Rider, 8-5. Lerch has now fanned 57 in 96.1 innings pitched.
??? Junior pitcher Lisa Geer, who led the team in strikeouts a year ago, has also notched 41 K???s so far this season. Geer has seen some time at the plate as well, posting seven hits, three runs, four RBI and one homer.
