Red Storm Softball Sweeps Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. ??? The St. John???s softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on the road at Army on Wednesday night, taking game one, 3-1, and picking up the second, 14-10. The Red Storm improved to 11-26 on the season as pitchers Lisa Geer and Spring Montgomery earned their fifth and first wins, respectively.
Game One:
Shauntaine Harris got St. John???s on the board early with an RBI double in the second inning. Harris plated Danielle Estrada, who reached first on an Army error.
The heart of the lineup continued to be fruitful for the Red Storm, as Loren Anguiano, Roxann Struble, and Brandy Reyes posted consecutive hits in the third frame. Anguiano singled to right field and advanced to second on an error. First baseman Struble drove in Anguiano with a shot to left field, putting St. John???s up 2-0, while Reyes recorded her second single in as many as bats.
Army recorded its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Chris Stauffer.
Red Storm pitcher Lisa Geer gave herself some extra breathing room when she singled through left side in the sixth inning, allowing Estrada to score her second run of the day.
Geer did a great job in the circle for St. John???s, earning her fifth win of the season in a 3-1 decision. She allowed one earned run on three hits and fanned six over a complete seven innings.
Reyes was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one while Struble and Tami Hill were 2-for-4.
Game Two:
The Red Storm jumped out to another first inning lead, as Struble and Reyes were back to work with a pair of back-to-back RBI singles. Geer posted St. John???s third run of the game in the top of the second on an Army error.
St. John???s kept it going in the top of the third inning when Estrada doubled to left-center field. She scored on a Spring Montgomery single to the gap in left field. Harris followed by firing her third home run of the season over the right field fence. The two-run shot made it a 6-0 game. Geer recorded her second hit and run of the game in the third in the frame.
Army broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning when shortstop Lindsay Gerheim drove in Sarah Yates with a scarafice fly. Erin McClain scored Chris Stauffer with a single up the middle to make the score 7-2.
Geer singled once again in the fifth inning and Hill reached on a fielder???s choice to set things up for Anguiano. Anguiano doubled to center field, driving in both base runners. She posted St. John???s 10th run of the game on grounder up the middle by Struble.
The Black Knights would not go quietly, as they posted a four-run rally in the fifth to keep the game alive.
Harris and King came across the plate for St. John???s in the sixth inning as Hill recorded her second double of the game in the side.
Montgomery made her first start in the circle against Army, allowing only two runs until the fifth inning. She was relieved by Geer in the middle of the sixth. Geer struck out four in relief, bringing her total to nine for the day.
The Red Storm won game two by a final score of 14-9. St. John???s 14 runs and 19 hits are both season highs.
