Red Storm Splits Two With Peahens

The St. John???s softball team split two against the St. Peters Peahens, winning the second game 4-2, but losing the second 5-2 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Red Storm field.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at St. Peters, but was moved due to field conditions.
The split gives the Red Storm a 8-25 record while the Peahens are 12-10.
Game One:
The Red Storm broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning when Bionka King scored on St. Peter???s error. St. John???s peppered hits over the second and fourth innings as Danielle Estrada, Spring Montgomery and Shauntaine Harris each singled during their respective at bats.
St. Peter???s took a 3-1 lead when Julie Saporito blasted a three-run home run. Junior pitcher Lisa Geer held the Peahens to five hits and struck out seven through seven innings.
Geer started the rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a standup double. King followed up with another double to center field, plating Geer and putting St, John???s within three.
The Peahen short stop, Christie Cowell threw out Estrada to end the game.
Game Two:
The Red Storm got on the board early as Tami Hill started the game with a lead off walk, then moved around the bases by Loren Anguiano???s sacrifice bunt and Roxann Struble. Brandy Reyes??? short hit got just past Peahen third baseman Julie Saporito as Hill charged the plate.
The Red Storm defense kept the Peahens at bay as it shut down the next nine batters.
Ona Holladay scored for the Red Storm in third inning as she crossed home on Reyes??? double.
In the top of the fifth, Peahen rightfielder Michelle Casares brought the score within one with a home run to right center, the Peahen???s first hit of the game.
Hill???s single past the shortstop in the sixth sent in King for an RBI, advancing the score to 4-1.
Mean Papierniak???s RBI in the seventh gave the Peahens their second run with one out left.
Red Storm pitcher Kim Lerch shut down Samantha Gable for the St. John???s 4-2 win.
Through seven innings, Lerch allowed just four hits on 88 pitches and 64 strikes, earning her fourth win of the season.
Peahen Amber Phillips who stayed on the mound through three innings was credited with the loss, falling to 3-6 on the mound.
Up next, the Red Storm will face Seton Hall for a BIG EAST doubleheader at home on Red Storm Field on Saturday, April 7. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
