Red Storm Softball Splits A Doubleheader Against Seton Hall

The St. John???s softball team split a pair of games against the visiting Seton Hall Pirates in BIG EAST action. The Red Storm fell 4-2 in game one before sealing a 5-4 victory in game two. Sophomore Danielle Estrada had a standout day at the plate for the Red Storm as she finished the two games with two home runs, 4 RBI and two runs scored. St. John???s is now 9-26 on the season, 3-7 in conference play.
Game One:
Seton Hall???s Leah Menichetti led off the third inning with triple to right field and scored two batters later to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Red Storm pitcher Lisa Geer settled down after that, allowing just one hit until the seventh frame.
Junior Danielle Estrada blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to post St. John???s first runs of the day and give the Red Storm a 2-1 advantage. The long-ball was Estrada???s second of the season and third of her career.
The lead would not last long as the Pirates answered right back in the top of the seventh inning, posting three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
The Red Storm fell to 8-26 with the loss, 2-7 in conference play. Despite striking out seven and allowing only one earned run, Geer was credited with the game one loss and is now 4-12 on the season.
Game Two:
Seton Hall???s Kim Schweitzer started both games for the Pirates and once again had no answers for the Red Storm???s Estrada. Estrada rocketed a solo home run to right field in her first at bat of game two, giving her team a 1-0 boost.
The Pirates broke through in the third with two run single from Shannon Pease.
Senior Loren Anguiano started the bottom of the third with a double deep to center field and Roxann Struble followed with a single up the middle. When Brandy Reyes reached first base on an error by Seton Hall???s shortstop, Anguiano tied the game up at 2-2. The Red Storm kept it going, wearing out Schweitzer as she issued walks to Spring Montgomery and Estrada. Estrada???s bases loaded walked forced in Struble and returned St. John???s lead. Reyes scored on another Pirate error as the Red Storm went ahead 4-2.
The hits kept coming for the Red Storm as rookie Ona Halladay doubled to start the bottom of the fourth. Halladay moved around the bases with a sacrifice bunt from Tami Hill and scored on a sacrifice fly from Anguiano. Struble notched her second straight hit of the game with a shallow single to right field.
Seton Hall chipped away at St. John???s lead, coming within run in the sixth inning. St. John???s right-handed pitcher Kim Lerch retired eight in a row leading up to the sixth inning and was efficient with her pitches, as 47 of her 63 pitches were strikes. Geer came in two get the last two outs of the sixth inning and close out the game for the Red Storm. She picked up her first save of the season in a 5-4 St. John???s victory.
