Men's Soccer Opens Season Against Fairleigh Dickinson

The Red Storm men's soccer team faces Fairleigh Dickinson tonight in the 2007 season opener. As part of the St. John's Nike Classic, the Red Storm plays at 8 p.m. following the Fairfield vs. Buffalo game at 6 p.m. The tournament continues on Sunday as Fairleigh Dickinson plays Buffalo at 5:30 p.m. and St. John's hosts Fairfield at 8 p.m.
STORMWATCH
-Under head coach Dr. Dave Masur, the Red Storm is 13-1-2 in home openers. -This is Masur's 21st season as a head coach and his 17th at St. John's. He holds an overall record of 296-92-51 and a 243-71-45 record with the Red Storm. -Tonight marks the 6th meeting between Fairleigh Dickinson and St. John's. The Knights hold a 4-1-0 record in the previous meetings with all four wins coming between 1979 and 1982. However, the teams did not play again until 2002 when St. John's picked up a 2-1 win. -On Sunday, it will be the 13th meeting between Fairfield and the Red Storm. St. John's holds an 11-1-0 all-time advantage and this will be the first meeting since 1995.
INDIVIDUAL HONORS
-Jason Landers and Ryan Soroka have earned their share of preseason accolades. -Both Soccer America and College Soccer News have named Landers a Preseason All-American. Landers is also the Preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. -Soroka, meanwhile, was also tabbed a Preseason All-American by Soccer America and was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
IN THE PRESEASON POLLS
-The Red Storm is in numerous polls this preseason. -17th in the NSCAA/adidas Poll. -10th according to Soccer America. -13th by Top Drawer Soccer. -12th by College Soccer News. -12th according to Soccer Times.
THE BIG EAST
-In the BIG EAST Preseason Poll, Connecticut was picked to win the Blue Division while St. John's earned the top spot in the Red Division. -Connecticut earned 10 first place votes in the Blue Divison and St. John's had nine first place votes in the Red Division.
CAPTAIN'S CORNER
-The 2007 Red Storm will be led by Tri-Captains. -Seniors Jason Landers, Jeff Stepan and junior Rory Quinn will lead the Red Storm.
