Red Storm Takes Second At McLaughlin

QUEENS, N.Y. - This weekend at the McLaughlin, St. John's took second on a well rounded effort from all five golfers. The Red Storm finished with an 8-under 832 (278, 278, 276), trailing only the Argonauts of West Florida, who finished with a 10-under 830 (282, 274, 274).
"We played very well and showed we can go up against some stiff competition" said St. John's head men's golf coach Frank Darby. "All five of our guys really stepped up in this tournament and showed improvement."
The Red Storm posted great scores throughout the two-day tournament recording team scores under par in all three rounds. Sophomore Mike Ballo Jr. was spectacular, posting a third place finish with a 3-under 207 (71, 70, 66). Ballo also posted the low score for the third round (66) and the second lowest of the tournament. Senior co-captain Keegan Bradley also posted a great score of 2-under 208 (69, 70, 69) to finish in fifth. Junior Kevin Velardo, 1-under 209 (71, 66, 72), senior co-captain George Zolotas, 2-over 212 (70, 73, 69), and sophomore transfer Evan Beirne, 3-over 213 (68, 72, 73), all finished in the top fifteen. Sophomore Dan Mollicone and Junior Casey Calmi competed as individuals.
The Red Storm now travel to Howey In Hills, Fla. to compete in the Mission Inn Classic. The three day tournament will begin on Friday October 5.
