STORRS, Conn. - The Red Storm men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 5 Connecticut in the teams third meeting with a Top-Ten team in the last four games. St. John's falls to 4-4-1 (2-1-0 BIG EAST), while UConn improves to 8-1-0 (3-1-0 BIG EAST).
"Tonight we played against a very talented team with a lot of senior leadership," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "I think we can learn a lot from tonight's game that will help us as we move forward this season."
The Huskies put the pressure on early with a pair of corner kicks in just the 4th minute, but could not take advantage. Later in the first half, the Red Storm countered with a flurry of three corner kicks in a span of less than two minutes. However, a shot wide of net by Rory Quinn was all St. John's would get from the three opportunities.
UConn got on the board in the 33rd minute when Ryan Cordeiro netted a header into the bottom right corner that beat Red Storm keeper Jason Landers. In the 52nd minute, the Huskies took a 2-0 advantage after Akeem Priestley beat Landers on a shot that banked off the left post and just crossed the line. Cordeiro tallied his second goal of the game in the 66th minute as his shot found its way underneath a diving Landers.
Tafadzwa Chiduku registered his first career shot in the 89th minute, but UConn keeper Josh Ford was there to pick up the save. Landers made one save and Neal Kitson also registered a save after entering the game in the 81st minute. The Red Storm allowed three goals for the first time in 25 games dating back to September 8, 2006 against Seton Hall.
St. John's returns to the field on September 30 at Providence.
