QUEENS, N.Y. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) unveiled their list of Scholar-Athlete Award recipients. St. John's took both awards for NCAA Division I schools and is represented by women's golfer Brittany Lambertson and fencer Luther Clement.
The award, sponsored by Robbins Sports Surfaces, is given to those student-athletes who have demonstrated aptitude in the field of academics, athletics and community service. Two winners, one male and one female, were chosen from Division I, II, and III. These student-athletes will be honored at a dinner presented by Jostens on Sunday, September 30.
"These two students truly embody the term scholar-athlete," stated Eric Rienecker, Director of Academic Support. "Both are extremely dedicated not only to academics, but to community service. They constantly set an example for the rest of their teammates."
Lambertson is a senior member of the golf team who is poised to lead the Red Storm this year. During the 2006-07 season, she helped St. John's finish in the top five in two tournaments, once while recording a two-round 149 to win the Roar-ee Invitational. She also finished 12th at the BIG EAST Championship. Lambertson is also very active in her community. She has created and ran four different golf lesson fundraisers to benefit Lou Gehrigs Disease (ALS) Research. Lambertson is also an astute student, holding a 3.78 GPA and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete Honor Society, as well as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Clement, a junior member of the St. John's fencing team and a two time All-American, was one of the team's best with the saber in finishing fifth at the 2006-07 NCAA Championship. Clement helped lead the Red Storm to an overall national second place finish. In 2005-06, Clement had a 28-5 record, helping the team to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championship. Clement, who is an English major, boasted a 3.73 GPA last year, and was a member of the Dean's Honor Roll as well as the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. Clement works as a tutor on campus and has been a part of campus-wide and individual service project.
