QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head women's soccer coach Ian Stone can add another victory to his resume, and it is with the United States Youth Olympic Development Program. The Red Storm coach spent Jan. 3-5 in Ventura, Calif., at the Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) Girls Interregional Tournament an assistant coach with the Region I U-17 Team and helped lead the team to a first-place finish among all regions.
"Winning the Under 17 ODP Interregional event was an outstanding accomplishment for Region I," Stone said. "The last game against Region IV - the West Region - was particularly exciting and fast-paced. Some of these players made major improvements throughout the training camp and tournament. I am proud to be a part of the team's success."
The event started with a stalemate between Region I and Region II (Midwest) in both squads' opening match, 1-1. Stone's team bounced back in the next game and posted a shutout en route to a 1-0 victory over Region III (South). With the 2-1 win over Region IV in the final day of the event, Region I clinched first place leading all teams with seven points.
"Being selected to be a part of the Region I ODP senior staff is a great honor for me personally," Stone said. "I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to work with the nation's elite youth players."
Stone has been with the Olympic Development Program for seven years with the Eastern New York South. As head coach, he led the team to a US Youth Soccer ODP National Championship in 2005, to an appearance in the national finals in 2002 and to three Region I Championships (2001, 2004 and 2005). This is Stone's second year as a member of the Region 1 senior staff. Last year he also helped coach the Region 1 Under 17 team, which also won the Interregional event.
