QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Joy McCorvey recorded a double-double and seniors Monique McLean and Kelly McManmon scored in double figures as the St. John's women's basketball team opened its 2008-09 campaign with a 70-52 win over Northeastern on Friday night at Carnesecca Arena.
"It was a great win," said head coach Kim Barnes Arico. "I was proud of the way the girls battled back. We came out strong, then we had a period when we were flat. But we got out of it and hung together and then we pulled away in the second half."
McCorvey led the way for the Red Storm (1-0) with a double-double effort on the night, scoring a team-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while grabbing 12 boards.
McLean and McManmon chipped in 13 points apiece in the victory. McLean was 5-of-11 from the field, 3-of-4 from the line and had seven rebounds in the contest. McManmon continued her efforts from a year ago from 3-point range, as she was 3-of-8 from long distance and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Rookie Da'Shena Stevens had a solid outing in her collegiate debut, scoring seven points and finishing second with eight rebounds. Freshman Britney Murphy saw 14 minutes of action in the game, scoring three points and posting two assists.
After Northeastern (0-1) took a four-point lead to open the game, the Red Storm surged and never looked back the rest of the way. McLean got things going with a jumper and McCorvey followed by connecting on consecutive baskets to put the Red Storm ahead, 11-4.
Northeastern chipped into the Red Storm lead, eventually coming within two, 20-18, with a Kendra Walton layup. St. John's quickly responded by going on an 8-0 run to jump in front, 28-18, at 7:21. The Huskies tried to cut the deficit down to single digits entering the half, coming within five, 30-25, but the Red Storm closed out the frame scoring five unanswered points.
In the second half, NU did not waste anytime getting on the board as Kim Carr drained a jumper, 35-27. The teams went back and forth until Sky Lindsay scored from long distance, giving STJ a 14-point lead, 43-29.
After the Huskies came within 10 points, 43-33, at 15:42, the Red Storm responded with a 10-0 run to go up 53-33 at 12:12. McLean sparked the run with a jumper and then converted the free throw for the extra point. St. John's did not let up the rest of the way and closed out with the 20-point win.
With the win, STJ improved to 24-11 all-time in season openers.
St. John's will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to face Dartmouth on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
