QUEENS, N.Y. -
Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
Opening statement:
"Monique [McLean] made some big plays at the end of the game and I was very proud of her. I thought we came out strong but fell into their trap of how they wanted us to play. Monmouth played well and made some big shots at the end but we fought them off and even when we went down a point we were able to come back."
On preparing for the next opponent, Baylor:
"Our girls know they have their work cut out for them in the next couple days. We need to work on the unforced turnovers which can hurt us and take away our shots. Against good teams like Baylor we must make sure we don't do that. They have had a week to prepare for us and it will be at their place so it should be a very intense game."
On starting the season 7-0:
"It is great for the confidence of our kids. As much as we have experience returning, we still are very young. We only have two seniors and we do have a lot of younger kids out there at times. For us to start the season like this is very important."
Senior Guard Monique McLean
On her performance at the end of the game:
"I was not playing that well, but at the end I knew it was crunch time and just tried to take over. I practice that shot a lot so I felt comfortable taking it. I was able to get around the defender and put it up right in the lane."
On battling through a tough start:
"It was frustrating at times, but I just tried to forget about it and keep playing hard. I knew that my shot wasn't falling so I just tried to focus on getting my teammates involved."
Freshman Forward Da'Shena Stevens
On getting acclimated to the collegiate game:
"I think I am getting more comfortable as the season goes on and as we keep playing games. I know my role better and my teammates are helping me to adjust."
On defending Monmouth:
"When we had to get stops we really stepped up at the end and denied them from doing what they wanted. We played hard and rebounded well in crunch time."
