Fullerton, Calif. - The Red Storm softball team traveled to Fullerton, Calif. to take on the Titans, but could not down the formally ranked team. St. John's threatened in the seventh but fell just short, 5-4.
"As a team, we are where we should be," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "We are playing the teams we need to in order to improve and challenge at the end of the year. Kat [Lawrence] showed the composure of a veteran and our other freshmen are really starting to step up."
The Red Storm was limited offensively for most of the game, garnering only four hits through the first six innings. It was St. John's second game in the just over twenty-four hours versus a team receiving votes in both polls and it yet again involved freshman pitcher Kat Lawrence. This time, Fullerton's Christine Hiner pitched well enough to trump the efforts of Lawrence and keep the Red Storm from back-to-back wins.
Being down early did not stop the Red Storm from attempting a valiant comeback, as sophomore outfielder Shauntaine Harris doubled with one out to score Danielle Estrada in the top of the seventh. The next batter, senior Bionka King, singled through the left side to advance Harris, who scored on the play on an errant throw from the catcher. Two batters later, freshman Kacee Cox blasted a home run to center field to cut the deficit to one.
Freshman starter Lawrence had a good showing after her complete game shutout against Long Beach State just a day earlier. Lawrence finished with eight strikeouts in just six innings, while giving up seven hits.
The Red Storm will have a day off before they return to Fullerton, Calif. to compete in the Worth Invitational. St. John's is scheduled to take on UC Davis at 9 a.m. (P.T.) and then the Cardinal of Stanford at 3:45 p.m.
