WASHINGTON, D.C. - The St. John's women's basketball team could not hold on to an early lead and watched Georgetown slowly work its way back into the game, eventually taking the lead and hanging on for the 61-60 win Wednesday night at McDonough Arena.
Monique McLean led the way for the team with 23 points, marking her third-straight 20-point scoring contest. The junior was 8-of-14 from the field, 3-of-6 from long range and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Kelly McManmon was the only other Red Storm player to score in double figures, adding 13 points. The Lee, Mass., native was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. On the defensive side, sophomore Joy McCorvey just missed out on a double-digit rebounding effort with nine boards.
The game started out as a back and forth affair between the teams. With the score knotted 6-6, McManmon took things into her hands and scored eight unanswered points to put St. John's up 14-6. The junior hit an off-balanced jumped and then connected on two 3-pointers from the baseline. After Georgetown got the lead down to four points at the 10:20 mark, the Red Storm responded by going on a 13-5 run to jump ahead 27-15. Up 30-17 with 2:08 to go in the half, the Hoyas (13-9, 3-6 BIG EAST) closed out the frame hitting three-straight baskets to cut the deficit to six, 30-24.
St. John's (12-10, 3-6 BIG EAST) quickly regained a double-digit lead to open the second stanza. McManmon capped the run by hitting her third long-distance shot of the game to put the score at 36-24. Georgetown slowly chipped into the Red Storm lead and eventually came within three, 49-45, at the 6:57 mark. Meredith Cox was a big contributor in the Hoyas' run, scoring all 13 of her points during that stretch.
After both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, GU went ahead for the first time when Aminata Diop got the rebound on a missed free throw and hit a layup at 2:31. The lead changed hands two more times before McLean nailed a 3-pointer with 57 seconds left, 57-55. The Red Storm could not stop Karee Houlette from hitting her own long-distance shot to put the Hoyas back in front, 58-57, with 37 seconds remaining.
Two costly turnovers in the waning seconds of the game hurt a Red Storm comeback. Sky Lindsay hit a 3-pointer with .04 seconds to put St. John's within one, 61-60, however time ran out.
The Red Storm will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Villanova on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The contest is designated as the "Pack The House" game and will feature a variety of promotional giveaways and a discounted $1 ticket to the game.
