QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team has earned an at-large bid to the 2008 Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), as announced by the organization Monday night.
The Red Storm (16-14, 7-9 BIG EAST) will have a first-round bye and then will host a second-round contest on Monday, March 24 at Carnesecca Arena. Game times will be determined on Tuesday. St. John's will face the winner of the Iona/Quinnipiac opening-round game, which will take place on Wednesday.
STJ is one of four BIG EAST teams selected to the field of 48 for the WNIT. In total, the league has 12 of its member institutions participating in postseason play.
The postseason appearance is the third for the Red Storm under the direction of head coach Kim Barnes Arico, who is only in her sixth year at the helm of the program. During the 2004-05 campaign, she led the team to the second round of the WNIT and then followed that with an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006, the program's first in over 17 years.
The Red Storm closed out the 2007-08 regular season strong and battled its way to a No. 10 seed in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament. The team won four of its last six contests, including an upset of then-No. 9 Notre Dame, 61-51, in the Red Storm's regular season finale on March 3. The win over the Fighting Irish was the second-straight upset for the Red Storm against its league foe at home. St. John's is coming off a 63-47 loss to Louisville on March 8 in the first round of the conference tournament.
