St. John's Opens BIG EAST Play Vs. Seton Hall

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team will take on the Pirates of Seton Hall at Red Storm Field this Saturday. The two teams will face-off in a doubleheader at Noon. The Red Storm leads the all-time series, 35-19.
• Last season, the two teams spilt in a doubleheader in Queens. The Pirates pilfered the first game 4-2, but St. John's regrouped to win in the second, 5-4.
• St. John's last scheduled game at home vs. Fairfield was ppd. due to rain.
• The Red Storm recently returned from the C of C Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The team went 3-2 at the tournament and finished third overall. St. John's picked up a pair of wins over Binghamton and a victory of the College of Charleston.
• St. John's went 5-2 over the past week. Over that span the team outscored its opponents 32-13, hitting 17 doubles and stealing 25 bases. The team also recorded 49 strikeouts in 47.1 innings with five complete games and two shutouts.
• The Red Storm recorded a team batting average of .312 and a team ERA of 1.18, while holding its opponents to a .218 average.

Cox Rocks The Vote
Freshman third baseman/catcher Kacee Cox was selected to the BIG EAST honor roll for the second time in her young career. Cox finished the week with a .500 average and had seven doubles, 12 RBI and a .917 slugging percentage.
Brandy Gets Better With Age
Sophomore catcher/first baseman Brandy Reyes hit .471 on the week and knocked in six RBI. Reyes also had a .608 on-base percentage and was perfect in the field. Reyes carried a .398 batting average in her rookie campaign.
Warning: Kat On The Loose
After striking out 15 against St. Peter's, freshman flamethrower Kat Lawrence continued her great week with two more starts at the C of C Classic. Lawrence finished with a 0.94 ERA, striking out 25 in 22.1 innings. She held opponents to a .200 batting average in three complete games including a shutout.
Shifting To A Higher Geer
Senior pitcher/designated player Lisa Geer had two great outings for the Red Storm over the week. Geer finished with a 1.27 ERA, eight strikeouts in 11.0 innings and a complete game.
Having Funn In the Outfield
Since moving from second base to left field, graduate student Alyson Funn is batting .300. Funn had two doubles and two RBI to go along with two stolen bases over the week's play.
Danger: Rox Slide!
Junior first/third baseman Roxy Struble continues to be consistent and hit for power. Struble finished the week with four doubles, six RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. The corner infielder also touted her best average for a week this year, hitting .300.
A Shot To Right, Then Durning For Home
Freshman outfielder Chelsea Durning continues to hit well, batting .400 over the fifth week of play. Durning also had seven runs to pace St. John's as well as .526 on-base percentage and two stolen bases.
Sumrall Have It; Some Don't
Freshman pitcher Linzee Sumrall had her best week of the season picking up two wins. Sumrall did not allow a run over two starts and earned a complete in one. The right-hander struck out nine in 8.1 innings holding opponents to a .207 batting average.
SCOUTING SETON HALL
• The Pirates went 15-35, 9-13 a year ago and return 13 letterwinners form last years team. Seton Hall also returns five starters and two pitchers from last season.
• Head coach Ray Vander May touts a record of 323-219-2 in 11 years at the helm of Seton Hall.
• Seton Hall is by paced junior third baseman Amanda Winn. Winn is batting .381 over 16 games with 16 hits, a home run and seven RBI. She also has a .476 slugging percentage and a .469 on-base percentage.
• Junior Kealan Waldron is having a solid season for the Pirates; batting .327 over 17 starts with 18 hits, 12 runs six doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI. The first baseman also has a .545 slugging percentage.
• Freshman outfielder Michelle Reed has preformed well for the Pirates, batting .318 on the season. Reed has 14 hits, seven runs and 4 stolen bases to go with a .400 on-base percentage.
• Senior Jenna Best, junior Shannon Pease and junior Leah Menichetti are all batting .300 or better this season for the Pirates.
• The Pirates' staff is anchored by sophomore pitchers Ashley Forsyth. Forsyth has 6 wins on the season to go along with a 2.22 ERA over eight starts and 53.2 innings. She has struck out 32, completed six games and has held opponents to a .261 batting average.
• Junior Kim Schweitzer has also pitched well for Seton Hall. Schweitzer has won two with two complete games in five starts. She has struck out 15 in 37.2 innings.
