QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Roxy Struble was awarded the school's first BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week honor in two years after St. John's opened conference play undefeated, taking two games from Seton Hall in comeback fashion.
Struble capped off her best week of the season, leading St. John's to two seventh-inning come-from-behind victories against Seton Hall in the Red Storm's BIG EAST opener this past Saturday. The junior finished the doubleheader going 5-for-7 with two runs, three RBI, a home run and a stolen base. Struble slugged an astonishing 1.286, while recording a .750 on-base percentage.
St. John's was able to defeat the Pirates 5-4 and 7-6 taking both games trailing when entering the final inning. Down 4-2 in game one Struble came up and tied the score at 4 on a clutch RBI single. In the second game, Struble blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the Seton Hall lead to 6-5 and give St. John's all the momentum it needed to keep its offensive production going.
The Red Storm is now 7-2 in its last nine games. Struble, who was an All-BIG EAST third team selection a season ago, is batting .419 with six runs, five doubles, a home run, and nine RBI over the past two weeks.
Struble has been selected to the honor roll twice in her career. The first came the week of March 10 in 2006 and the second was last season on April 2. The Red Storm's last POW was Lauren Lupinetti on May 24, 2006.
St. John's will host two home contests before continuing its BIG EAST schedule on the road vs. USF and Louisville this weekend. The Red Storm will face Fairfield tomorrow March 25, and take on Monmouth on Wednesday at Red Storm Field.
