St. John's To Face Fairfield And Monmouth

BIG EAST Player of the Week: Roxy Struble
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team will face the Fairfield Stags at Red Storm Field on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. before taking on the Monmouth Hawks in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m.
• The Red Storm leads the all-time series with Fairfield 14-12. The Monmouth, St. John's series is tied at four games a piece.
• In last years meeting with the Stags, the Fairfield offense took the day, downing St. John's 12-5 at Fairfield. In 2006, the teams split a double header in Queens. The Hawks won last year's meeting 6-5 at Monmouth.
• The Red Storm recently opened BIG EAST play this past weekend. St. John's was able to take both games of a double header vs. Seton Hall at Red Storm Field.
• In both games against the Pirates, St. John's trailed when entering the seventh inning, but received clutch performances from BIG EAST Player of the Week Roxy Struble and also freshman Kacee Cox.
• The Red Storm will travel this weekend to USF and Louisville to play the next four games of its BIG EAST schedule.
STORM TRACKER
Stru-balicious
Junior first baseman Roxy Struble was awarded her first ever BIG EAST Player of the Week award on Monday. Struble was instrumental in St. John's conference wins over Seton Hall. The first baseman hit .714 with two runs, a double, a home run and three RBI.
Cox Rocks The Vote
Freshman third baseman Kacee Cox was selected to the BIG EAST honor roll for the second time in her young career. Cox finished the week with a .500 average and had seven doubles, 12 RBI and a .917 slugging percentage.
Brandy Gets Better With Age
Sophomore catcher Brandy Reyes has hit .476 over the past two weeks and knocked in seven RBI. Reyes also had a .613 on-base percentage and was perfect in the field. Reyes carried a .398 batting average in her rookie campaign.
Warning: Kat On The Loose
After striking out 15 against St. Peter's, freshman flamethrower Kat Lawrence has continued her great play with two starts at the C of C Classic. Lawrence finished with a 0.94 ERA, striking out 25 in 22.1 innings. The freshman also picked up her first BIG EAST win versus Seton Hall, striking out nine in a complete game.
Shifting To A Higher Geer
Senior pitcher/designated player Lisa Geer had two great outings for the Red Storm over the past two weeks. Geer finished with a 1.27 ERA, eight strikeouts in 11.0 innings and a complete game.
Having Funn In the Outfield
Since moving from second base to left field, graduate student Alyson Funn is batting .333. Funn has two doubles, a triple and four RBI to go along with two stolen bases over the past two weeks.
A Shot To Right, Then Durning For Home
Freshman outfielder Chelsea Durning continues to hit well, batting .391 over the past fourteen days. Durning also has nine runs, a double and an RBI as well as .526 on-base percentage and two stolen bases.
Sumrall Have It; Some Don't
Freshman pitcher Linzee Sumrall became the first St. John's starter to have a winning record after a complete game win versus BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. Sumrall now has a 2.28 ERA, three wins, two complete games and 11 strikeouts over 15.1 innings in the past two weeks.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
• The Stags went 20-24, 7-9 a year ago and return 14 letterwinners form last years team. Fairfield also returns eight starters and two of their three pitchers.
• Head coach Julie Brzezinski touts a record of 290-269-4 in ten years at Fairfield and an overall record of 535-464-4 in 19 season as a head coach.
• Fairfield is by paced freshman outfielder Kristina Lingo. Lingo is batting .400 over 16 games with 18 hits, three doubles, a triple, and six RBI. She also has a .511 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage.
• Senior Julia Jacoby is having a solid season for the Stags, batting .300 over 16 starts with 15 hits, two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI. The outfielder is also slugging .440 and has four stolen bases.
• Sophomore Kristie Trifiolis leads the Stags in RBI with seven. The infielder is also batting .292 with 14 hits including a double.
• Fairfield's staff is anchored by two freshman pitchers; Kelli Panter and Sarah Minice. Panter boasts a 3.42 ERA over 45 innings. She also has 39 strikeouts to go along with five complete games. Minice has been equally impressive, recording three complete games in 43.1 innings. She has struck out 27 and has a 5.01 ERA. Both pitchers have won two games for the Stags.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
• Last season the Hawks went 31-18 overall and 13-5 in the Northeast Conference. Monmouth returns 12 letterwinners, six starters and a pitcher from last year's campaign.
• Head coach Carol Sullivan has been with Monmouth for the past six years and has a 134-126 with the team.
• The Hawks are led by junior center fielder Nichole Alvarez. Alvarez is hitting .372 with two home runs and sxi RBI.
• Senior first baseman Kara O'Dell is second on the team in batting with a .371 average and has three RBI.
• Sophomore catcher Jessica Nicola is also batting .326 and has eight RBI.
• Freshman pitcher Melissa Mehrer boasts a 2.54 ERA on the season and has two wins and four complete games.
• Junior starter Kristine Sawlsville has a 3.73 ERA and has struck out 35 in 41.1 innings. Sawlsville also has five complete games in six starts.
