QUEENS, N.Y. - For the first time in history, the St. John's women's basketball team advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals and Inside The Red Storm gives fans the behind-the-scenes scoop on the past few days as senior Tiina Sten blogs about the team's win over Boston College and its preparation for NC State.
Thursday night
Wow what a game! It feels really nice to get a win over a good team like Boston College on our home court. The game wasn't a blow out, but throughout the game I had a feeling that we were going to get this. We played confident, hard and everybody brought in something extra. I'm proud of all the girls!
After the game in the locker room, coach's (Kim Barnes Arico) son Trevor did the traditional victory dance with Sheree (Ledbetter). I wish you all could see it. I can't describe it in words...ha ha. We found out that we are going to North Carolina which got us even more excited. Many of the girls have family close to the area and hopefully a lot of them are able to take a road trip and come see the game. Unfortunately, Finland is not really close to N.C., so I don't think my family is able to make it.
I want to thank all the people who were at the game cheering for us. For me and Kia (Wright) it was probably our last game at Carnesecca Arena, and it left us with an amazing memory. I wish we could bring all the fans to NC State with us!
Friday
In the locker room the girls were all smiles because of our win last night, and they were excited about going to North Carolina. Practice today was little lighter. We started getting ready to play NC State by watching film and going through the players on the team and specific plays. As usual, the seniors and juniors beat all the younger kids on the shooting contest. We practiced for a while and then headed home to pack and get some rest before our early flight tomorrow morning.
I have a good feeling about this game coming up. NC State is a really good team and it has some great players, but so do we and lately we've been playing at a level we haven't played before. If we keep it up and play like we can I don't think there's anything that can stop us.
Saturday
This morning we left Queens at 6 a.m. and headed to Newark Airport to catch our flight to Raleigh, N.C. It was a little disappointing when it was raining when we landed. We were all expecting nice sunny weather. But even though I need a sun tan, it's not what we came here for so it was time to forget about it and go to practice. We practiced at Reynolds Coliseum and then the coaching staff treated us to a great dinner at Outback Steakhouse.
It was a long day so later that night we just watched some more game tape and now it's time to get to bed. I believe that we are well prepared for tomorrow; we seem to be focused and ready to bring it on.
